Wayne‑Westland staff presented a renewal recommendation for the district’s food service contract with Aramark at a modest estimated increase of $5,728.93 for the coming year and asked the board to approve the renewal at a future meeting.
Staff said Aramark supplies meals for breakfast, lunch and after‑school feeding at the high schools and that the vendor’s recent performance has improved from prior years when the district had complaints. “They replaced their food service director. It’s been like night and day,” a district presenter said, noting improved coordination for after‑school programs and game‑day service.
Board members used the presentation to press for higher‑quality and more culturally varied meal options, noting the district’s student population includes families with diverse dietary needs. Trustees discussed whether the district should authorize a modest per‑meal spending increase to improve quality and asked staff to explore options and estimated cost impacts.
Several trustees urged creating an ongoing student tasting panel or student council survey to provide regular feedback on menu items; board members also suggested involving building‑level leaders and the high‑school student councils to advise on improvements. Staff and trustees said the district already offers alternative choices for students with dietary restrictions and that state requirements constrain some aspects of menu composition.
The board did not take a vote at this meeting. Staff said they will follow up with the vendor and return proposals for menu upgrades, a student feedback process and the formal renewal for action at a future meeting.
