Prospect officials told the Forestation Board on June 12 that the state Transportation Cabinet had signed an order lowering the speed limit on US 42 from 45 to 35 mph and that transportation improvements, including roundabouts and an expanded right-of-way, are planned for the corridor.
At the meeting Mayor Doug (referred to in discussion) and Herb said the cabinet’s order is intended to align posted speeds with the proposed roundabout design. Herb said a public hearing will be scheduled in mid-July and urged board members to attend. Linda noted the board should consider proactive planning for trees that may be removed or relocated when the right-of-way is widened.
Herb described the public meeting as likely to be on Wednesday, July 16, at Saint Francis Episcopal Church and said transportation representatives would present diagrams and videos. Board members discussed possible tree planting or memorialing farther back from US 42 where the future right-of-way might require removing street trees.
Board members asked staff to monitor the project schedule and bring details to the next meeting so the Forestation Board can identify trees at risk and recommend replacements to mitigate canopy loss.
