Public Amenities Commission approves consent calendar, schedules planning briefing and agendizes park renaming

The Redondo Beach Public Amenities Commission on June 11 approved a four-item consent calendar, agreed to agendize a presentation from the Planning Department about the commission’s role, and voted to place a recommendation to consider renaming one of the Omar Eaton Parkettes in memory of Joe Dweziak on a future agenda.

The commission approved the consent calendar — which included the affidavit of posting for the meeting, updates on recreation and parks items, minutes from the May 14 meeting and the library director’s report — with three affirmative votes and one abstention on consent item F‑3. The presiding commissioner called for the motion and the commission recorded the abstention as noted during the roll call on the consent vote.

Commissioners also heard brief staff announcements. City staff invited commissioners to a summer reading kickoff scheduled for Saturday that will coincide with the city’s Juneteenth celebration, and noted the Police Department will host a blood drive at the library on Wednesday, July 16; sign-up information will be posted on the city website.

During commissioner member reports, several commissioners raised park-related items for follow-up. Commissioner Mercauley asked staff for an update on prior discussions about the city negotiating leases with the school district for district-owned parkland, citing Alta Vista Park as an example. A separate exchange flagged inadequate permanent lighting for fields on the school district side of Alta Vista, with users relying on diesel-powered light generators; Commissioner Lang asked staff to clarify whether permanent lighting or other solutions are feasible and whether the city should engage with the district on the issue.

Commissioners requested and were told the Planning Department will be invited to return at the next meeting for a formal presentation on the commission’s role and purview; the presentation was described as a discussion item with time for questions. Staff indicated the presentation was tentatively scheduled for the next agenda.

Commissioner McCauley raised several items for future agendas: follow-up about Riviera Village Park questions from resident Steve Villarino, a request to assemble a more formal Charter Day display, a request to collect and deliver commission feedback on a possible commission merger to city staff, and a recommendation to agendize renaming one of the Omar Eaton Parkettes to honor the late Joe Dweziak. The commission voted in favor of placing the renaming recommendation on a future agenda.

Commissioners also discussed preservation staffing: a commissioner noted that Andrew, previously involved in preservation work, is no longer with the city and asked who should be the contact going forward; staff advised commissioners to begin with Sean Scully, who will direct questions to the appropriate preservation staff (Stacy was also named as a previous contact). The presiding officer asked commissioners to direct specific follow-ups to departmental liaisons so staff can incorporate questions into upcoming presentations and provide follow-up as needed.

The commission confirmed its next regular meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on July 9 in the Redondo Beach Council Chambers at 415 Diamond Street. The presiding officer closed the meeting after calling for and receiving a motion to adjourn.
