Board adopts Pride Month resolution; members urge community celebration and safety

The Poudre School District R-1 Board of Education voted 6-0 June 10 to adopt a resolution supporting Pride Month 2025, following remarks from board member Kristen Draper and a brief presentation introduced by the district compliance prevention and response coordinator, Shana Cycak.

Kristen Draper described her personal experience as a parent and former PFLAG leader and urged the community to focus on belonging and student safety. Draper and presenter Shana Cycak asked the district and board to support training and community events and cited several upcoming local and regional Pride activities, including Safe Space training, community picnics and runs.

Board members spoke in favor of the resolution and thanked Draper for bringing a personal perspective to the discussion. The superintendent also spoke about the district’s responsibility to ensure belonging and to support accelerating academic progress while maintaining inclusive practices.

The board approved the resolution without amendment. The roll call vote recorded ayes from Jim Brokesh, Kristen Draper, Connor Duffy, Kevin Havela, Scott Schoenbauer and Jessica Zamora; the motion passed 6-0.

Board members and the presenter emphasized training for staff and extracurricular sponsors, outreach to community Pride events, and consistent messaging that schools are safe spaces for students. No budgetary commitments or follow-up assignments were recorded at the meeting beyond the resolution’s adoption.

The district posted links to Pride Month resources and event information on the board webpage and encouraged community members to attend local celebrations and trainings referenced in the presentation.
