Calfee project reaches substantial completion; transportation center and band-hall work continue

District facilities staff gave a construction update on June 9 reporting that Calfee Middle School has reached substantial completion, the transportation center design is advancing with VOK as architect, and additional parking and fine-arts improvements are under way.
Calfee Middle School
Construction staff said Duratec completed Calfee to substantial completion despite a 45-day delayed start; the district expects the campus to open in August. Photos presented showed two-story classroom wings, commons areas and new fine-arts and band facilities.
Transportation center and site
The district said VOK is the selected architect for a new transportation center sited on the districtnorth 42-acre property. Plans shown include a dispatch room with glass visibility for bus key pickup, training spaces for drivers, a water well and retention pond on the property, and staging that reserves acreage for future parking expansion (up to about 80 buses). The district expects a GMP or guaranteed pricing in July or August and a ground-breaking in late August or September with a target opening for the 2026–27 school year.
Other projects
- Parking: Willis High School parking-lot expansions are under construction; Parking Lots E, H and I are scheduled to be complete before school starts to accommodate program moves.
- Lynn Lucas Fine Arts: The band-hall addition at Lynn Lucas (a fine-arts addition) is in progress; the district showed interior and exterior renderings.
Insurance and bidding notes
Staff said the district sought competing property-insurance quotes for the TASB policy and found few bidders willing to compete; the districtTASB property premium increased by roughly $200,000 year over year, attributed mainly to adding Calfee to property schedules and broader market conditions.

Facilities staff said they will return with GMPs and construction schedules as each project moves into the construction phase.
