Board reviews capital projects, grants and security upgrades; consent agenda passes

Committee reports at the June 11 McKeesport Area School District meeting outlined several summer projects, grant applications and security upgrades that were included on the consent agenda and approved by the board.
Buildings and grounds reported that school‑zone flashers were installed at one elementary site and that easements for a second site had been secured. The high‑school security vestibule project was approved at a special meeting on June 4; the district expects work on the vestibule and related door hardware and key changes to continue over the summer with alternative visitor protocols when school opens. Restroom upgrades at the stadium were completed in time for graduation, with concession-stand work ongoing.
The Francis asphalt project is scheduled to start in July. Committee members said many of the summer projects will be paid from the district’s capital reserve fund; the finance committee reported a capital reserve balance of about $3,600,000.
On grants and outside funding, the district reported multiple submissions and applications: a school violence prevention program grant for $625,000, an accelerated tutoring program request for $350,000, and continued Title funding (Titles I–IV) that was described as likely to be level-funded. The district also acknowledged that DICK’S had provided funds to run a summer program and the board expressed appreciation for that support; separate public comment at the meeting discussed that partnership in depth.
Under technology and safety, the board approved a Ready to Learn grant purchase of a SmartPass digital hall‑pass system intended to improve hallway supervision and reporting.
The full consent agenda — which included curriculum, technology, facilities and personnel consent items referenced by agenda sections 4–7 and 11 — was approved by voice/roll-call as presented.
Ending: Board members said they will continue implementing the capital plan in phases over the summer and asked staff to place future facility or third‑party program requests on the public agenda with a formal motion and supporting documentation.
