Planning Commission approves PTAC nominations after resident urges more District 5 representation

The San Antonio Planning Commission on June 11 approved the nominating committee's recommendations for primary and alternate appointments to the Planning Commission Technical Advisory Committee (PTAC), after a community member asked commissioners to reconsider one nomination to improve representation from District 5.
Valerie Rodriguez, senior planner with the Policy Administration team, told commissioners the PTAC Nominating Committee met to review submitted applications and presented a slate of nominees for the commission's approval. "What you're looking at is the packet that was presented to the PTAC Nominating Committee with the applications that were submitted," Rodriguez said during the presentation.
Bianca Maldonado, who identified herself as a community member and current PTAC participant, spoke in opposition to one recommended reappointment. "We are losing a PTAC member who represents District 5. He's not being reappointed as a community member," Maldonado said. She told the commission that District 5 and the East Side are underrepresented on PTAC and that neighborhood knowledge is as valuable as professional experience. Maldonado said one candidate's packet listed a District 8 address even though the applicant is a District 5 resident and asked the commission to reconsider the nomination and to re-advertise to improve outreach.
Rodriguez and staff noted the workload for PTAC will be heavy during the upcoming Unified Development Code (UDC) cycle. Rodriguez told commissioners the last UDC cycle involved one to two meetings per week, each lasting two to four hours.
Commissioner Dustin Orian moved to accept the nominating committee's recommendations; Commissioner Jacob Sanchez seconded the motion. A roll-call vote recorded votes as follows: Commissioner Orian — yes; Commissioner Sanchez — yes; Commissioner DeSueck — yes; Commissioner Lopez — yes; Commissioner Lett — yes; Commissioner Bustamante — no; Commissioner Siegel — yes; Chair Peck — yes. The motion passed.
Staff congratulated the new PTAC appointees and said they will begin work on the next UDC cycle. The commission did not direct staff to reopen recruitment or to change the submitted nominations at the meeting.
