Cedar Hill briefing highlights Juneteenth plans, strong park turnout and several consent items

Cedar Hill — At the June 10 briefing session, the city manager and Parks Director Sean Ray briefed the City Council on upcoming events, recent parks turnout and consent items scheduled for consideration on the regular agenda.
Director Sean Ray outlined Juneteenth activities scheduled for Saturday, June 14 at Grimes Park, 501 E. Wintergreen Road, noting gates open at 5 p.m. and that council members had received VIP packets and lanyards with a QR code for VIP parking and information. Ray said the event will include children’s activities, food vendors and bands, with a headliner funk group noted in the packet.
The council heard several metrics related to recent parks events. Ray reported more than 1,500 people attended a recent Music in the Park concert, with over 20% of attendees coming from DeSoto; a Kid Fish tournament attracted over 1,500 children and participants; the lagoon registered more than 1,000 swipes during the weekend; and staff reported two life-saving interventions by lagoon lifeguards. “Kudos to the staff because it was an overall overwhelming response and you all handled it extremely well,” Ray said.
City Manager remarks covered upcoming calendar items including a metroplex mayors’ meeting and the Opportunity Summit at the Shops at Redbird, the Big Machines Expo for children, an upcoming council workshop on Midtown West plan implementation, a special called meeting for board and commission interviews, the city’s secure paper-shredding event on June 28, and the July meeting schedule. The city manager also said city offices will be closed on Thursday, June 19 for the Juneteenth holiday.
The briefing listed several consent and agenda items for the regular meeting, including: a proposed contract with Vertex 1 in the amount of $62,165 to upgrade the water customer portal system (to add features such as live chat and chatbot responses); a project implementation agreement with Dallas County using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for the Somerset sidewalk extension project; and authorization to purchase personnel protective gear from Casco Industries for $65,000. The items were identified for council consideration on the regular agenda; no votes on those consent items were recorded during the briefing session.
The manager and staff answered council questions about the Somerset sidewalk project’s connection to school routes and grant restrictions. Ray said the sidewalk would extend the walking path from Virginia Weaver Park toward Halifax to improve neighborhood connections and that CDBG rules limit where grant funds may be applied.
