Council approves $17,000 in hotel-occupancy-tax funds to support lacrosse invitational

The Bee Cave City Council voted unanimously to approve a reimbursement of $17,000 from the city’s hotel-occupancy-tax (HOT) fund to the Lake Travis Youth Association (LTYA) to support advertising and promotion for the Austin Lacrosse Summer Invitational Tournament, which LTYA will hold the weekend immediately following the council meeting.
City staff introduced the HOT-fund application and said the request is for reimbursement of part of LTYA’s advertising and promotional expenses. City staff told council that LTYA previously received $20,000 in hotel-occupancy-tax funds for a fall lacrosse invitational tournament.
Scott Cronk, executive director of the Lake Travis Youth Association and a Bee Cave resident, told the council LTYA’s ask is intended to attract tourists to the Bee Creek Sports Complex and surrounding hotels and restaurants. Cronk said last June (2024) the organization hosted about 40 teams and reported roughly 64 room nights; he noted those figures are an imperfect measure. For the upcoming weekend, Cronk said 28 teams were registered at the time of the meeting, including 22 teams from outside the local Bee Cave area and 17 teams from outside the Austin/San Antonio region; he said about six teams were local to Bee Cave and Lakeway. Cronk said 56 room nights were booked in the Sonesta room block and that actual room reporting is likely higher because some attendees book outside the block or after it expires.
Council members asked whether Lakeway had provided funding and discussed the city’s prior contributions to similar tournaments. A council member confirmed the city’s contribution is intended for marketing, advertising and promotion rather than direct tournament operations; Cronk confirmed the funds are for promotion only.
A council member moved to approve the $17,000 HOT reimbursement; the motion passed unanimously.
Records provided during the presentation included promotional materials, web-traffic numbers for LTYA’s event page, and examples of on-site branding. City staff said LTYA submitted a post-event funding analysis for a previous fall event that complied with city policy.
