Resident raises safety concerns after car crashes into pole; neighbor also cites hoarder house at 167 Jackson

During public comment at the June 9 Amherst City Council meeting, Linda Turley of 111 Jackson Street told the council there has been “no movement at 167 Jackson as far as the hoarder house,” and described junk cars in the driveway with flat tires.
Turley also described an incident she said occurred June 7 at about 8:30 p.m. on Park Avenue in which, she said, “Mister Derek Hall” jumped a curb and struck a telephone pole. “He self reported that he was going 45 miles an hour,” Turley said, and she said a police officer told her it “had to be 60 to 65 to break the pole like that.” Turley said the driver was charged with failure to control and was not tested for drugs or alcohol, and she urged the council to address neighborhood speeding.
Councilmember Janick asked whether data from the speed-display signs could be obtained. A staff speaker at the meeting said the crash was under investigation and that speed signs are in place; council members asked staff to request and share speed data and accident information from the police department for the streets Turley named.
Turley said neighbors on North Main, Cornell, Central, Jackson, Tenney, Lincoln, Tara, Blossom Park, Elyria, Northwood Hills and Sunrise Forest had reported similar speeding concerns on social media.
Council did not take formal action on the hoarder-house complaint at the meeting; it accepted the request to obtain speed and accident data for follow-up.
