Carbon County shelter approves proposal to seek commissioners’ OK for fenced dog run; discusses repairs, donations and adoptions

The Carbon County Animal Shelter Advisory Commission voted June 3 to send a proposal for a staff-only fenced dog exercise area to county commissioners for approval after discussing facility repairs, recent donations and adoption statistics.
The measure, moved and seconded during the meeting at 44 Susquehanna Street in Bimthorpe, passed on a voice vote. Chairman (name not specified) said the fenced area would be used only for shelter dogs and staff to provide exercise and enrichment and to help show off dogs’ behavior off-leash during adoption meet-and-greets.
The commission’s director, Tom (Director), gave the monthly reports for April and May. For April he reported 16 kennels; the month opened with 22 dogs and closed with 16, with seven adoptions, one owner surrender and eight animals returned to owners. For May he reported 16 kennels; the month opened with 16 and closed with 15, with nine adoptions and two owner surrenders. Tom said donations of pet food came from Freshpet and that the shelter received a large pallet of donated food. He reported supplies expenditures listed as $20,091 in the earlier report and $2,658 in the May summary, and that the shelter has ordered the last three kennel doors needed to complete the set.
Commission members discussed several facility issues. The commission said a donated $5,000 sum is available for repairs to a storage shed but requested the commissioner's office solicit contractor bids so the work can be completed; maintenance staff are currently occupied with other county projects. Members also flagged an intermittent roof leak above kennel areas that has left a moldy spot in the ceiling and asked that it be fixed before it worsens. Camera equipment has arrived but installation is pending; staff reported crews have evaluated camera placement and the shelter is waiting on installation scheduling.
Other operational items discussed included a requested yard sale fundraiser (advertising is on hold pending formal approval), possible rental or reuse of an external storage unit if the shed is not yet available, driveway and parking-line maintenance (county crews have the striping equipment), and a forthcoming short meeting with the state dog warden scheduled after the commission meeting. The commission also sent to the commissioners an Eagle Scout proposal to build an outside donation box for after-hours contributions.
