Board proclaims National Gun Violence Awareness Day, honors foster parents and names first Loudoun Youth Poet Laureate; design awards presented

National Gun Violence Awareness Day: The board read and approved a proclamation recognizing June 6, 2025, as National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Loudoun County. Scott and other Moms Demand Action representatives addressed the board and noted local activities, including a blood drive kickoff at Inova Dulles and educational outreach on secure firearm storage. The proclamation reaffirmed the county’s support for preventing gun violence and encouraged community awareness activities.
Foster Parents of the Year: The board recognized Juan and Joanna Rivas as Loudoun County’s Foster Parents of the Year. The couple was presented a resolution noting they became approved foster parents in December and had served as foster and respite providers to several children. Department of Family Services staff encouraged community members interested in fostering to attend upcoming informational sessions listed on the county website.
Loudoun Youth Poet Laureate: The board read a resolution recognizing the inaugural Loudoun Youth Poet Laureate program and the county’s first laureate, Krisha Dodiwala, a Briar Woods High School student. The winner read an original poem, and the program’s founder, Jessica Monti, and student ambassadors were recognized. Staff noted applications for the next round will open in September and community workshops will run through the summer.
Design Excellence Awards: The Loudoun Design Cabinet presented the Signatures of Loudoun Design Excellence Awards and displayed winning projects, including Hummingbird Hideaway Treehouse, Birkby House Conservatory and others across categories like contextual design, infrastructure and public spaces. Board members received a commemorative book marking 20 years of the awards.
Each of these items was approved or accepted as read; no substantive policy measures were enacted as part of these presentations.
