Port commissioner reports airport issue; resident urges action on neighborhood safety

Two public-comment speakers addressed council on June 3: Port of Benton Commissioner Roy Keck provided multiple port updates and a Richland resident described safety concerns in her neighborhood.

Keck reported several port items: the recent completion of the SR 240 railroad crossing pavement and signaling improvements to Horn Rapids; an aviation career day and job fair at the Richland Airport with static displays, presentations and internship opportunities; the Young Eagles annual rally that provided more than 100 free flights for youth; the start of a two-day Port strategic-plan workshop involving more than 40 community partners; and a USS Triton commemorative wall dedication scheduled for Saturday, June 14 at 10 a.m. Keck also reported that Richland utilities discovered an unpermitted water-line tap at the airport. He said the port was contacted, has taken the lead and contracted a contractor to perform ground-penetrating radar testing on airport lines to identify and address any unauthorized taps. "Once we get the data back from this ground penetrating radar, we will, then take the necessary steps," Keck said.

A Richland resident who identified herself as Kathy described ongoing safety problems near a neighborhood park, including people camping in the park, vehicles harassing family members and men looking into vehicles. She said officers have responded but she was told calls are high and to "lay low," and said the problem is worsening. "I need help," Kathy said, describing an incident where people in vehicles followed her husband and attempted to run him off the road.

Mayor Richardson asked Kathy to provide contact details to the city clerk for follow-up. Keck thanked the council for partnership with the port. No formal action resulted from either public comment.
