Arkansas City approves $20,000 update to downtown historic-district nomination

The Arkansas City Commission voted to enter into an agreement with Davis Preservation to update the National Register nomination for the city's downtown commercial historic district, using a previously awarded Historic Preservation Fund grant not to exceed $20,000.
City staff said the project will review each building currently in the district to determine whether it should be listed as contributing or noncontributing, remove properties where buildings have been demolished, and add buildings that are newly eligible or were omitted from the earlier survey. Staff noted the last comprehensive survey of the district dates to 2017 and that an earlier survey had been completed in 2018.
"It will also look at removing a few properties where the buildings were demolished over the years and look at adding a few buildings that are newly eligible," a staff member said during the meeting.
Commissioners discussed the geographic scope; staff said the update is focused on the downtown commercial core (Summit Street and adjacent blocks) and will not include churches, which would require a separate project.
A commissioner moved the resolution and it was approved with an affirmative vote; the motion instructs the city manager to execute the agreement with Davis Preservation for an amount not to exceed $20,000 and to complete the work in coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office.
The update is intended to reflect changes since the district's prior nominations and surveys and to provide an up-to-date inventory for preservation planning and potential grant opportunities.
