Torrey Hills sixth-graders demonstrate student-built robots during board meeting

Sixth-graders from Torrey Hills School presented their yearlong STEAM-plus design projects to the Del Mar Union School District board and attendees, demonstrating problem-driven design thinking, 3D-printing and basic coding.
Student teams described projects including a “writing bot” to help students with a broken hand write more easily (Akash Serba and Maddox Garcia: "Our robot is called the writing bot"), a mobile scanner robot to help the librarian (Grace), a card-collection bot to speed lunch lines and manage student lunch cards (Ian), a trash-sorting robot (Elizabeth Lan and Shreya Kondicker) and a vision-sensing, multi-language navigation assistant (Joovar, Sri and Victor) that uses a Raspberry Pi for translation.
Principal Jacob Ruth and Torrey Hills teachers and parents joined trustees to applaud student presentations. Board members asked questions and praised the students’ presentation skills and design thinking approach. The district recognized Torrey Hills and thanked teacher Tanya Lubo for leading student learning in design thinking, although teachers who prefer not to be in the spotlight did not attend.
Ending: Trustees congratulated students on practical, community-minded designs and staff said student work helps illustrate the district’s STEAM-plus emphasis in the curriculum.
