Supervisors approve demolition of small, deteriorated building near county children's library

Kelly Griffin, Harrison County facilities and maintenance, asked the board to approve demolition of a small, unoccupied building located between the children's library and a nearby school. Griffin said the structure has a damaged roof, rot, nonfunctional HVAC, evidence of animals inside and mildew in the kitchenette area.
Staff said the building has been unused for several years and that the county continues to pay insurance and utilities. They recommended dismantling the structure as the repair cost would likely exceed the building's value. The board moved and seconded a motion to authorize demolition; supervisors recorded a voice vote in favor and directed Facilities to coordinate removal, check utilities and handle disposal.
Supervisors asked staff to confirm power and water were disconnected before demolition and to report back on the demolition timeline and any salvageable materials. Facilities staff said they would coordinate the work and provide cost estimates to the board if needed.
