Local rescue Hearts of Gold seeks donations, adopters after treating dogs with medical needs

Tammy Goldberry, who runs the Hearts of Gold animal rescue, described her organization's work taking in puppies and medically needy dogs and asked listeners to support adoptions and donations.

Goldberry said Hearts of Gold operates as a nonprofit rescue that typically takes in puppies and works with the Cochise County Sheriff's Office and Sierra Vista Animal Control. She said the rescue performs spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, rabies vaccinations and other medical care, sometimes managing significant procedures such as eye removals or amputations.

She told the radio hosts the rescue houses dogs at her property and relies on community donations and small grants: "All the funding that we have is from the community or from, the little grants that we can get or from my pocketbook." Goldberry described an Amazon wish list and a new website (heartsofgold.org) and said she posts adoptable dogs on Facebook and TikTok.

Goldberry recounted a case study: a dog nicknamed Booger was found in Douglas and became severely ill with distemper while at the shelter. "He came to my home ... he was Wren, but distemper is an upper respiratory issue, so he was just full of boogers all the time. So I just started calling him booger and it kind of stuck," she said. She said Booger recovered and is now shy but friendly and good with cats.
