Cochise County sheriff describes suicide intervention, high-speed stolen-vehicle pursuit and SWAT arrest in busy week

Sheriff Mark Dannels summarized several rapid public-safety incidents that occurred within roughly a two-day span, including a suicide intervention, a high-speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle and a SWAT response to a reported shooting.

On the mental-health response he described seeing a man "lean over a bridge" and later helping get the person to the hospital. "We had some words on that. I took a little bit, got him off the bridge," Dannels said. He credited the sheriff's care team for assisting in arranging treatment and described the episode as an example of the mental-health demands on local policing.

Dannels recounted a separate high-speed pursuit that began when a vehicle was stolen in Bisbee after its owners left keys inside while picking up food. He said the vehicle had three dogs inside. Officers used tire-deflation devices during the pursuit; a sergeant deployed spike strips and "sadly, we got 2 other vehicles too" but those are being handled, he said. The driver, a female Dannels described as impaired, was taken into custody, charged with multiple offenses and "we will take care of those tires" after the traffic stop. "It was a stolen car," he said.

The sheriff also described responding to a reported shooting in which a resident fired one round and threatened to "take the cops on." He said the sheriff's office and Sierra Vista Police Department established a perimeter and a regional SWAT team later took the suspect into custody about 20 minutes after officers arrived. Dannels credited the regional SWAT team's training and coordination: "I was so impressed that we have a regional SWAT team now. Sierra Vista PD is a huge component of that with the sheriff's office. They did so well." He said the suspect was taken "to custody without incident."

Dannels used the incidents to make a public-safety appeal for motorists to clear the roadway for emergency responders and to be vigilant about scams and suspicious behavior. On driving near an active incident he said: "If you see emergency lights, don't stop in the roadway. Get to the right. Maneuver to the right. Get off the roadway. Make it safe for you. Make it safe for us so we can apprehend that individual." He also advised the public on safety during pursuits and shared thanks for interagency coordination.
