Commissioners send resolution to N.C. DOT asking sign review for Lees Mill Road bridge

The Scotland County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution June 2 directing staff to transmit a request to the North Carolina Department of Transportation to review signage and make a safety determination for the Lees Mill Road bridge (referred to in the packet as Leesville Road/Bridge).
County staff said DOT requested a formal resolution rather than an informal letter so the state agency could formally consider whether removal of posted signs or issuance of new signs would be appropriate. Staff briefed commissioners that DOT had already indicated there is no state law forbidding fishing from the bridge and that the state would assess whether allowing fishing and parking at the site "will not create an unsafe or hazardous condition."
A commissioner moved and the board approved the resolution sending the request to DOT with language asking the state to determine whether signs should be removed subject to DOT safety determination; the vote carried without recorded opposition.
The resolution tasks DOT with the safety assessment and clarifies the county’s position that the state retain responsibility for any roadway-safety determination on a state-owned facility.
