County GOP chair Kathy Lawrence earlier in the meeting had told the board that the Person County Republican Party submitted three recommended candidates for the vacancy: Liz Bradscher, John Bird and Jessica Leeser. During the board’s discussion, one commissioner nominated Donald Long, citing his prior civic involvement and attendance in recent elections. Several commissioners spoke in support of Long’s nomination; the board then voted and approved the appointment.
Long addressed the board briefly and said he loves Person County and was humbled to serve. The county attorney clarified the appointment term as filling the Republican seat on the Board of Commissioners through Dec. 7, 2026.
