Commissioners proclaim June Elder Abuse Awareness Month after county reports increase in elder-adult reports

The Scotland County Board of Commissioners adopted a proclamation June 2 recognizing June 2025 as Elder Abuse Awareness Month and urged residents and community organizations to report suspected abuse, neglect and exploitation of vulnerable adults.
Wendy Stanton, social work program administrator, and Alana (Felona) Jackson, adult services supervisor, presented fiscal-year statistics they said showed an increase in reports received by the county’s Adult Protective Services: 69 reports in fiscal year 2023, 72 in fiscal year 2024 and 80 reports so far in fiscal year 2025 (the year was not complete at the time of the presentation).
Stanton noted that in North Carolina in fiscal year 2023–24 there were roughly 38,490 reports statewide and that Scotland County has seen an uptick in local reports. The proclamation asks residents, community groups, faith leaders and medical facilities to learn to report suspected abuse to the local county social-services department.
Commissioners voted to adopt the proclamation; staff said a public recognition ceremony is scheduled on June 18 at 10:30 a.m.
