SJVIA resumes 'Walking Works' employee challenge; Tulare County wins both trophies

The San Joaquin Valley Insurance Authority reported results from its Walking Works Challenge, held for the first time in six years. The wellness competition awarded two trophies: one for average total steps and one for highest average participation.
Staff reported County of Tulare averaged 33,387 steps, beating County of Fresno’s average of 29,336 steps. Tulare also reported higher average participation (20%) than Fresno (14%), and Tulare retained both trophies. Board members and staff described positive employee engagement during the event and discussed whether the challenge should be held more often.
One board member raised concerns about how cycling and high‑speed rides were counted in the step total because the tracking tool capped strenuous activity at lower speed thresholds. Staff said they would look into the device/app settings used during the challenge.
