Shanae Joyce Stringer, who said her nonprofit Black Youth Inc. is serving as fiscal sponsor for the event, told the commission the June 19 gathering at the Eugene Farmers’ Market will be free and include vendors, community resources, speakers, an elders’ space and a youth zone. "We'd like to honor the elders in the community," she said, adding that the event offers an educational and cultural program and a space to support Black-owned businesses.
Commissioners moved and seconded a motion to approve the full $1,000 request; the motion carried on a voice vote with no opposition or abstentions recorded.
Commissioners and staff discussed volunteer and media support for the event. Staff said they would share the volunteer list and coordinate logistics. The commission also asked staff to help publicize and to invite local media.
The funding vote was taken after a brief Q&A about the event’s location and scope; the applicant confirmed the event would be at the Farmer’s Market and that the request was for $1,000.
The commission did not specify a detailed expenditure breakdown during the public discussion. Staff said they would follow up with event organizers to coordinate volunteer support and logistics.
