City begins review of consultant management practices; staff to develop tools and training

The Policy & Services Committee on May 28 received a staff briefing on a citywide work plan to develop and implement best practices for consultant management, with the goal of improving decision-making, product quality and consistency across departments.
City Manager Ed Shikada introduced the project as a comprehensive effort to examine how consultants are selected, scope work, are managed through the life of projects, and how staff skills and organizational supports can be strengthened. "This is a comprehensive review of how we make decisions on consultant engagements and then how those engagements proceed," Shikada said.
