Maury County Public Schools board approves tenure recommendations and honors 42 retirees

The Maury County Public Schools Board approved a slate of tenure recommendations and recognized 42 district retirees at a special-called meeting, with board members moving and seconding the two procedural items and the motions passing without recorded tallies.

The board approved the special-called agenda on a motion by Mr. Moore, seconded by Miss Stevenson, and later approved the tenure recommendations on a motion by Mr. Moore, seconded by Miss Dawson. The meeting record states the motions passed but does not list a roll-call tally.

“We have 42 retirees with 807 years of experience with Maury County Public Schools,” a district staff member said during a recognition ceremony, reading the list of retirees and noting the length of their combined service. The board invited retirees to the front for individual recognition and a group photo.

Miss Ventura, presenting the tenure recommendation, said tenure is awarded through evaluation as well as years of service: “Tenure is earned through a very difficult pathway; it is not just years of service, it is also evaluative and summative of your performance. You must score above average on your evaluations for multiple consecutive years.” The board approved the list of names presented on the meeting agenda.

A board member who spoke following the tenure motion thanked teachers for their work: “Our kids could not be in better hands than the teachers of this county,” the board member said, praising district staff and teachers.

The meeting record includes the names of retirees and the names of staff members who were recommended for tenure. Retirees named during the ceremony included (selected examples): Bettina Green (41 years), Julie Tidwell (36 years), David Walker (35 years), Barbara Woodard (31 years), and others from schools across the district. The tenure presentation listed more than two dozen educators by school, including Julie Austin (Columbia Central High School), Joanna Berry (Spring Hill High School), Amy Borkowski (Columbia Central High School), Casey Brasher (systemwide), Libby Clark (Sanofi Unit School), and many others as read aloud during the presentation.

Board members noted the meeting was shortened and that several members were absent; the record states the meeting was convened as a special call with a single substantive agenda item (the tenure recommendation) plus the retirees recognition. After the presentation and approvals the board adjourned.
