Students report civic club wins and state/national qualifications for FBLA and drone teams

Abby Hood reported on AG Votes, a nonpartisan student club that registers and educates peers about voting. She told the board AG Votes received the Governor’s Civic Engagement Award three years in a row (2021–22, 2022–23 and 2023–24), meaning at least 65% of eligible students were registered under the program’s reporting. The students also described a partnership with the New Voters project focused on encouraging seniors to register when they pick up cap and gown materials.
Student leaders from Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) described chapter growth from 18 to over 50 members (a 211% increase) and community service projects including holiday drives (300+ items collected) and student‑led trash pickups. FBLA reported over 30 members qualifying for the Pennsylvania State Leadership Conference and five students qualifying for nationals in Anaheim.
The district’s drone club reported competing at nationals (Fairmont, West Virginia) and winning prestigious awards: one team earned a judges’ award for leadership and sportsmanship, and another team — “Bill and the Boys” — won an Excellence Award at nationals. Students said five teams from the district qualified for nationals this year; the drone club also expanded middle‑school participation through a captain/mentorship program.
Board members and staff praised the student presentations and invited the drone team to present results and a demonstration at the June meeting should they win or return with results from nationals.
