Sustainability committee outlines solar options for arena, landfill plans and EV charging station updates

At the Common Council meeting on May 27, Councilman Clark reported on the city’s Sustainability Committee meeting held May 19 and summarized ongoing efforts to expand solar installations and electric vehicle charging.
Clark said a vendor presented options for putting solar on the Cool Insurance Arena and outlined several payment approaches; committee members had previously considered a different option that did not proceed. He said the vendor’s proposal was still at the conceptual stage and that the committee is collecting better cost figures for council consideration.
On landfill solar, Clark said county efforts to standardize rooftop and ground-mounted solar projects are slowing local progress as stakeholders coordinate a common approach. He also reported that the vendor that manages the city’s charging stations has taken over operations and is working to bring chargers that are currently offline back into service; supply-chain issues were cited as a delay.
Potential public charging locations under consideration include the Warren Street parking lot, Pearl Street and Hudson Avenue. Clark said the committee and staff are also exploring charger designs that would fit the city’s existing street poles and ornamental infrastructure.
The committee also discussed the city’s Climate Smart Communities efforts and a community hydro project; Clark noted a recent ceremony marking recommissioning of a hydro facility that provides hydro credits to the city.
Council members did not take formal action on the sustainability items during the meeting; staff will return with more detailed proposals and cost estimates.
