A Greer resident told the City Council on May 27 that a building at 200 North Lyon Street Extension has been a long-standing safety and public-health concern. Joshua Nowinski said his family first reported the property in July 2023 and that the structure is “severely dilapidated, potentially filled with asbestos, and has become a nesting site for thousands of bats.”
Nowinski said neighbors have repeatedly reported the condition and described the situation as a public-health and safety issue: “This matter…is a matter of health, safety, and accountability,” he told the council. He asked when the city would take action and said previous administrative notices and court-level steps appear to have progressed slowly.
Mayor Danner responded that staff would contact Nowinski and that the city has an administrative and, in some cases, court-driven process to resolve hazardous structures; the mayor said the matter may involve legal or warrant issues that can lengthen timelines. Miss Duncan (city clerk) confirmed the city had the speaker’s contact information and staff later told Nowinski someone would be in touch.
No formal enforcement action or vote was taken during the meeting; council directed staff to follow up with the resident and to report on the status of administrative and legal steps already taken.
