Madison County activates text-to-911 service for emergency communications

RICHMOND, Ky. — Madison County emergency communications staff told the fiscal court on May 27 that countywide text-to-911 service is live.
Staff said citizens can send a short text message to 911 using their phone’s standard messaging app; the county has been testing the service and reported typical acknowledgement latency in tests of about 10 to 20 seconds. The county urged texters to keep messages short and to be prepared to provide location and incident details when the call-taker responds.
The announcement followed an employee update in which communications staff also reminded the public that outdoor siren testing (normally the first Saturday in June) will be postponed this year because of the Kentucky Special Olympics events in the area.
No vote was required. County staff said they will begin public information efforts, including posts on the county website and social media, to notify residents about the new text capability.
