Kyrene committee narrows long-range planning to regional, redesign options to address projected enrollment drop

The Kyrene Elementary District (4267) Long Range Planning Committee on May 21 narrowed four conceptual approaches for addressing declining enrollment to two priorities — regional and redesign — and asked district staff and the demographer to model those approaches for a follow-up meeting in July.

The committee's discussion came after district staff presented data showing the district was built to serve about 20,000 students but is projected to have roughly 11,000–12,000 students over the next five years, which staff said would translate to an approximate $7,000,000 reduction in revenue if no changes are made. The committee considered four high-level approaches: capacity driven, minimal change, regional, and redesign, and then used a group-consensus exercise to identify the two approaches to analyze further.

Why it matters: District leaders said the decline in enrollment will reduce revenue and that staffing and facility choices will determine whether the district can preserve the level of classroom resources and programming it prioritizes. The committee instructed staff to return in July with demographic models and financial scenarios for the two chosen approaches so members can evaluate trade-offs with more detailed data.
