District staff told the New Caney Independent School District Board of Trustees on May 19 that 254 teachers had earned Teachers Incentive Allotment (TIA) designations and that state funds will be disbursed to eligible teachers in June.
Christy Gates, who presented the update, said the district began the multi-year process in 2021 with stakeholder input, submitted captured data to the Texas Education Agency and Texas Tech for vetting, and learned in April that 254 teachers earned designations. "Two fifty-four of our teachers did earn those designations, which is gonna bring in from the state, not the local budget, approximately $2,000,000 that will be put into the hands of our teachers," Gates said.
Gates said the district used two components for eligibility: the teacher evaluation system (T-TESS) and measures of student growth through student learning objectives, which allowed a wide range of roles to be eligible, including special education, coaches, content teachers and fine arts instructors. She told trustees teachers will receive lump-sum payments in the June paycheck, with awards ranging from roughly $3,600 up to $23,000.
Gates said staff will hold a reception for designated teachers before the summer break and emphasized that teachers who did not qualify this year can reapply in future years because data will be captured annually.
The board did not vote on the TIA item at the meeting; the presentation served as an informational update.
