Nye County approves seven public defender contracts to expand indigent defense capacity

The Nye County Board of County Commissioners on May 20 ratified contracts for seven private attorneys to serve on the county's roster of appointed public defenders.
Contracted counsel approved (motion carried 5–0): Philip H. Brown; Nathan L. Gent; Karen L. Hanks; Jerna Shahani; Carl Shelton; Thomas M. Wells; Jason Ernest. The county manager and program staff said the appointments respond to a state caseload study that showed the county requires additional contract counsel to meet workload standards. The Board authorized funding for the initial contracts and directed staff to work with the Department of Indigent Defense Services and a program administrator to balance caseloads and clean up case‑management data in the county’s legal server system.
Several applicants addressed the board during the public portion: multiple applicants outlined trial experience and local availability; the Department of Indigent Defense Services representative encouraged the county to fill at least nine contracts over time and noted she will help the county recruit and certify attorneys. The county manager said staff will pursue a program coordinator and will aim to distribute categories and cases equitably.
What's next: Contracts will be executed and staff will work to finalize category qualifications, update legal‑server case records, and assign case categories and rosters. The county manager noted additional appointments may follow after program cleanup and state certification confirmations.
