Town water officials told the council May 21 they have received a draft of a water-budget study prepared by the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) and will circulate comments before the report’s release, expected in July.
Water agent John Drew said the draft is “unequivocally” valuable, offering a detailed quantification of the Castle Valley aquifer and its interaction with surface drainages. The Water Advisory Committee will review and submit comments to the authors before the official release.
Officials said the study cost about $100,000; UGS paid roughly half, and a federal grant covered the remainder so the town’s direct cost was about $9,000. Councilors and staff described the report as providing new technical detail that will inform aquifer-management strategy and future interactions with the Division of Water Rights.
Staff emphasized this is a draft and they will limit substantive public discussion until the final report is released and the town can properly brief the public and stakeholders.
