The Budget and Finance Committee on May 21 voted 3‑0 to forward to the full Board an ordinance that would raise the daily stall fee at the city‑operated Alemany Farmers Market from $50 to $60 and establish a consumer‑price‑index escalator for future rate adjustments.
Sophie Hayward of the City Administrator’s real estate division told the committee the $60 fee reflects a review of other Bay Area market fees and is intended to cover increased operating costs such as security, custodial and landscaping. On a per‑square‑foot basis Hayward said Alemany currently charges about $0.42 per square foot while other San Francisco markets charge between $0.50 and $0.98 per square foot depending on seasonality and configuration. The office said it would begin outreach to vendors and provide a 60‑day notice before implementing the new fee.
Supervisors emphasized the market’s role as a community hub and asked staff to work with vendors on improvements to the site. Chair Connie Chan said she supported moving the item forward while encouraging further collaboration.
Public comment: none. The ordinance was forwarded to the full Board with a positive recommendation (3‑0).
