USD 383 selects quality instruction, professional learning as KESA focus; sets six- and 12-month measures

Trina and Lucas, district staff leading the KESA process, presented an update May 20 on district work under the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation continuous-improvement framework.
The district had used stakeholder input from site councils, leadership teams and community members to score internal readiness across multiple KESA fundamentals and "chose Quality Instruction" as the area the state will measure for the system action plan, Trina said. The district selected "professional learning" as the structure to support that focus.
The state—s KESA definition of quality instruction, staff said, includes five critical elements; the district will emphasize two of them for professional learning: deep student engagement and intentional, cohesive instruction. As part of the action plan, the district set measures of progress: within six months it will develop and provide professional learning about quality instruction for district leadership groups to guide planning and implementation; within 12 months it will implement and support a professional-development program that emphasizes the district's selected elements of quality instruction.
Presenters said related work on positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS) and adoption implementation will continue and that leadership teams would be trained to ensure consistent expectations and coaching at building and district levels.
Board members thanked staff for the work and asked about assessment sources; staff said balanced assessments include the refreshed state ELA assessment (results expected in October) and classroom-based assessments and that the state assessment portfolio will be a compliance measure for KESA.
No formal board action was taken; staff said they will continue implementation and return with progress updates.
