City to install automated water meters at 145,000 addresses under ‘True Reads’ program; residents to receive advance notice

The city announced the True Reads program to install automated water meters at more than 145,000 residential locations starting in 2024 and continuing over four years.
Officials said automated meter reading technology will reduce estimated bills, lower meter‑reading costs and reduce employee injuries. The city said it will maintain an online map showing neighborhoods where crews currently are installing meters (cityoftulsa.org/truereads), will place a door hanger 1–2 weeks before work and that contractors will personally contact residents on the day of installation.
The presentation said residents will be briefly without water for a maximum of 30 minutes during the swap and advised they should run water for a few minutes afterward to restore pressure and clear cloudy water. As crews swap meters, they will also perform a lead service line inspection and post results on the online map, the city said, noting staff do not expect many lead service lines but want to document any found.
