Germantown tree task force plans plant palette and retailer incentives for Poplar Corridor

Commissioners reported that Germantown's tree task force is preparing a plant palette and a set of incentives to encourage property owners and retail tenants along the Poplar Corridor to update their frontage plantings.
Commissioner Nischowicz said the task force has identified locations along the Poplar Corridor near Germantown Road and plans to target retail locations such as Truist, First Horizon and Regions Bank. "We want to take a couple of assigned locations. We had really pinpointed a couple of locations along, the Poplar Corridor near Germantown Road," Nischowicz said. He said the task force will present a plant palette and offer incentives, including coordinating with Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW) to remove unhealthy trees at no cost and working with staff member Cameron Ross to identify financial incentives for property owners and tenants.
The goal, commissioners said, is to create a standard planting and maintenance approach they can replicate across other corridors to "de-age" street frontage, improve usability and visibility, and encourage private investors to adopt the standard. Commissioners said there are no specific implementation dates yet and that further outreach to retailers and property owners is planned.
Commissioners characterized the effort as ongoing and said they expect additional reports at future meetings.
