Planning staff turnover prompts Kern County official to prepare wage comparison

Randall Cates, who works in the Kern County Planning and Natural Resources Department, addressed the board during public presentations on May 20 to note staff turnover and to preview a forthcoming wage-comparison report.
"Part of that process is retention of land use planners in the department," Cates said, noting transfers to the City of Bakersfield planning department. Cates said he would return next month with specific comparisons and what he believes are wage discrepancies between the county and the city. He said the comparisons aim to help reduce turnover and keep complex projects moving.
Cates described two large projects that illustrate workload: the Airport Commerce Center industrial project, which he said is about 1,500,000 square feet of warehouse space, and the Buttonbush Solar Project on roughly 12,000 acres. He said those projects require retained planning staff to progress timely reviews.
Board members acknowledged the work and said they looked forward to Cates' next presentation. The board did not take immediate action during the meeting.
