UDOT outlines June traffic change on 5600 South; no-left-turn 'through' configuration planned

UDOT engagement staff told the Roy City Council on May 20 that work on the 5600 South reconstruction will require a temporary traffic configuration that eliminates left turns across parts of the roadway for roughly three months.
Nancy Cousins, a member of the UDOT engagement team, said the change — described repeatedly in the meeting as a temporary "no left turns" or "through you" configuration — will require motorists to travel farther to a designated U-turn pocket at the Golden West Credit Union (the presentation identified the credit union near the intersection) and then make right turns to reach some destinations. Cousins said the project team plans an animated video showing motorists how to navigate the temporary pattern and will distribute it well in advance of implementation.
Cousins said the through-you configuration is expected to last about three months and will allow crews to complete work in the center of 5600 South without closing the road. She also said access to the base and to Freeway Park Drive (Missile Way/Freeway Park intersection) will change in the coming weeks; that traffic pattern is planned to be in place for several weeks before the through-you start so motorists can become familiar with it.
Councilmembers asked how UDOT will distribute the video beyond municipal channels. Cousins said UDOT will share the materials with surrounding cities including Riverdale, Hooper and West Haven and encouraged the Roy council to circulate the materials through city channels; she gave the project contact 5600south@utah.gov and said business cards and a project website would provide the materials.
Cousins also said the project team is trying to expedite work so drivers will be using a roadway that feels complete "a year from now or sooner," although finishing tasks and some signal work could continue into the following summer.
No formal council vote was required on the update. Cousins recommended residents watch the city website and the project's web materials for the animated simulations and said the city council could request UDOT bring the video to a future council meeting.
