Summer meal service to run at 68 locations beginning June 2; transportation hiring and bus deliveries ongoing

District operations staff reported May 20 that Food and Nutrition Services will begin summer meal service on June 2 at 68 locations — 29 schools, 23 community sites and 16 mobile bus or caboose stops — and that information will appear on the district website shortly.
Director of Food and Nutrition said the program is sponsored by the district with funding from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and that First Baptist Church of Ellenton has been added as a mobile-site partner to serve an underserved intersection.
Transportation staff reported interviewing eight new bus-driver candidates over two days and that 16 candidates are currently at various stages of training (including the eight newly interviewed). Four of the seven buses from last year’s order have been delivered; three remain to arrive in the next two weeks, and an additional 10 buses were ordered to be delivered in December. Transportation will offer CDL classes through the summer to support hiring.
Staff reminded the board of the district’s biannual “bus wave off” on May 29 at 5:30 a.m. as a recruitment and community-engagement event.
Ending: Staff said summer program details will be posted online and encouraged community partners to share meal-site information with families who may need access to free summer meals.
