Public-health agents describe breastfeeding classes, 'Becoming a Mom' and community health worker plans

Monique Kerner, identified herself as the family and community wellness agent, updated the Ellis County Commission on local breastfeeding resources and upcoming classes during the May 20 meeting.

Kerner said the county received state recognition for an increase in breastfeeding resources and that the "Becoming a Mom" program will continue locally. She said families from Hays, Salina and Quinter have participated. Kerner also said funding is in place to begin another class this summer; she said the next session is scheduled to start July 31 and that the program team hopes to offer two more classes before June 30, 2026.

Separately, a new community health worker introduced themself and outlined responsibilities. The new worker said they previously served as a family and community wellness agent in Barton County and expect to begin community health worker duties in August. They described their role as connecting residents to health, mental-health and social-service resources and said they are working on training, partner connections and billing arrangements. They said they have established links with High Plains Mental Health and local public-health contacts.

Kerner also referenced a program in Sedgwick County called "Baby Talk" and said local families can be referred to that program, including virtual offerings. The transcript does not show any county vote or formal action resulting from the presentations.
