Committee approves acceptance of live-fire training facilities grant for regional use

The Government Operations Committee voted May 19 to approve acceptance of a live-fire training facilities grant that Deputy Fire Chief Pelletier said will replace an aging training site and improve regional firefighter training.
"Our current facility is over 38 years old. It lacks some of the current safety standards that are required out there," Pelletier said, adding that the Fire Protection Commission seeks a facility within an hour’s drive of neighboring departments so multiple departments can train together.
Councilor Lemmon praised the proposed facility as "a really impressive training facility," saying on-site live-fire capability will improve safety for municipalities in the area. The committee approved the award without objection after a councilor moved passage and another seconded.
Deputy Chief Pelletier also invited committee members to view scheduled live burns for new firefighter trainees at 9:00 a.m. the following day, an event staff said would take place at the current training site.
Acceptance of the grant allows staff to proceed with project planning and coordination with regional departments. The committee did not record a roll-call tally in the meeting transcript; approval was noted as passed without objection.
