High Point City Council voted on May 20 to annex a western portion of the Allen Jay Elementary School parcel and to rezone the full site to a conditional Institutional district to facilitate demolition of the existing building and construction of a new school.
Staff said the action will resolve an administrative and functional split in jurisdiction that currently leaves part of the campus outside city limits. Herb Shannon, senior planner in the Planning and Development Department, said city utilities already serve the school and that annexation is a "logical expansion" for the city because the site abuts city limits on three sides.
