Board accepts police donations and approves fire department surplus equipment

At its June 11 meeting the Evansville Board of Public Safety approved the police department’s request to accept equipment donated by the Evansville Police Foundation and approved the fire department’s request to surplus multiple items.
Captain John McQuay told the board the police department requested permission to accept donations from the Evansville Police Foundation that include six decked truck‑bed units for school resource officer vehicles, one LRAD and Bearcat mount, 14 AED units with boxes and batteries, and a digital evidence computer with software. The board unanimously approved accepting the donations.
Deputy Chief Kim Garrett presented fire department requests to surplus eight portable radios (models and serial numbers listed in the department’s paperwork) and to surplus a hose dryer located at Station 9 that the department described as outdated and beyond repair. Garrett said newer fire hose material dries more quickly and the department plans to use the freed space for donated exercise equipment. The board approved both surplus requests by voice vote.
Why it matters: The donations add equipment to the police department at no cost to the city. The fire department’s surplus actions remove nonfunctioning or outdated equipment from active use and free space for other gear.
All motions were made and seconded by unnamed board members and passed unanimously among the two board members present. The board did not attach additional conditions to the donations or surplus approvals during the meeting.
