Evansville board approves Tiki on Main bike‑night change and street closure for overflow concert

The board voted to amend Tiki on Main’s prior bike‑night approval so that, because a dumpster will occupy two of the four originally requested spaces near the Cook Science Center, the event will instead use two spaces on Northwest Sixth Street. The board also approved a separate request to close Main Street from Fifth to Sixth Street on Sunday, June 22, from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., to serve as pedestrian overflow for two concerts scheduled at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Why it matters: both approvals affect downtown traffic and on‑street parking near Signature School and other nearby businesses. The board noted the change to Sixth Street was intended to reduce resident complaints and to avoid conflicts with the dumpster that will occupy spaces near the Cook Science Center.
At the meeting Curtis, a city staff member, explained that construction at the Cook Science Center will put a dumpster in two of the four requested spaces and said the applicant asked to use either two spaces on Main Street in front of Signature School or two spaces on Northwest Sixth Street. A board member said she preferred Sixth Street; another board member agreed. The motion to amend the bike night to include two spaces on Sixth Street passed by voice vote.
Separately, Curtis described the Nate Bergasse Overflow Event as a pedestrian overflow closure for concerts being held by Tiki on Main and said the applicant planned to keep Main Street closed for the entire period rather than repeatedly open and close it during the afternoon and evening. The board approved the Main Street closure for June 22 by voice vote.
Both motions were made and seconded by unnamed board members and carried unanimously among the two board members present. Curtis said he would notify the applicant of the approvals and would hold any permits pending required documentation when applicable.
The approvals were recorded among the board’s routine event permits; no additional conditions or new fees were announced at the meeting. The board meets next on June 25 in Room 301 of the Civic Center.
