Sunnyside Foundation previews Gives Week, community grants and relief fund

Liz Sortero, CEO of the Sunnyside Foundation, gave an update on the foundation's community and school-support programs and previewed the foundation's Gives Week schedule.
Sortero said the foundation closed a round of classroom mini-grants and expects to award about $45,000 in this cycle. She described continued support for dual-enrollment, Dollars for Scholars, the nurse-snack program (a multi-year commitment supported by UnitedHealthcare) and a recent $100,000 gift to furnish the district cybersecurity program. Sortero also said the foundation worked with district staff to support CT/CTE programs and a recent ribbon-cutting for the EV automotive program.
On emergency relief, Sortero said the foundation aims to raise $125,000 and to support as many as 83 families with up to $1,500 each in cash assistance and/or legal support when funds are available. She said food distributions and other community investments (including an El Pueblo Neighborhood Center partnership and an art showcase at the Tucson Museum of Art) are planned.
Gives Week events: Sortero outlined a Sept. 14 kickoff at Mission Manor (race/walk and a health fair) and a Sept. 19 Gives Day block party (performances, vendors, free admission), and noted BYU home-game charitable collections Oct. 11. Cox is the presenting sponsor for Gives Day and the foundation listed multiple community partners.
