University presidents briefed the Iowa Board of Regents on spring commencement results and campus initiatives on June 12, 2025.
University of Iowa President Wilson reported that 5,497 students graduated across 16 ceremonies this spring and highlighted faculty research awards and student honors. Wilson noted two faculty in ophthalmology — Ed Stone and Val Sheffield — received the Helen Keller Prize for work on macular degeneration and glaucoma, and highlighted a Goldwater scholarship winner and the university—s biomedical engineering collaborations.
Wilson also described a new corporate partnership: the John Deere Scholars program, funded with a $6,600,000 commitment from John Deere to support 20 scholars per year. The program covers approximately 90% of participating scholars— college costs (tuition and associated expenses), provides mentoring and places a full‑time coordinator in Davenport high schools to support college readiness and application assistance. Wilson said when fully implemented the program will have about 60 scholars on campus and intends to support a range of majors.
University of Northern Iowa President Mark Nook said nearly 1,600 graduates crossed the stage this spring, representing 22 countries, 28 states and students from 96 of Iowa—s 99 counties. Nook highlighted a record cohort of 30 doctorates of education, the institution—s educator preparation program (he said regent institutions produce 50% of Iowa teachers), and several student leadership and community engagement recognitions.
Iowa State University President Wintersteen reported five commencement ceremonies with 4,770 graduates and several students with notable placements and internships, including hires at John Deere and graduate school placements. Wintersteen also described extension and outreach programs such as a rural cybersecurity initiative that has reached more than 2,600 farmers and 133 programs and resources, supported by USDA and regional risk‑management education centers.
No formal board action was requested. Regents thanked the presidents for the updates and for campus hosting of board members and visitors during the meetings and commencement season.
