Douglas County sheriff's office warns older residents about rising scams, offers safety tips

Deputy Ryan Faulkner, Douglas County's senior resource deputy, told the town hall the county has seen an increase in scams and fraud and encouraged older residents to take time before responding to solicitations.
"Douglas County has seen an uptick in scams and fraud by 35%." Faulkner said, noting that reporting improvements could partly explain the rise in recorded incidents. He urged residents to wait at least a day before acting on a request involving money or personal information and to consult trusted friends or family.
Faulkner also advised residents to use the sheriff's website for information about common scams and to report incidents. He said the sheriff's office maintains online materials and a senior-focused page with fraud-prevention guidance.
Panelists and the commissioner echoed the call to be cautious about urgent texts and phone links that ask for immediate payment or personal information. Residents were advised to contact law enforcement or county resources if they suspect fraud.
