McNeil residents urge commission to oppose proposed 1,052-acre feedlot near town

Lisonbee Morse told the Cochise County Planning and Zoning Commission during call to public that many McNeil residents oppose a proposed 1,052-acre feedlot planned south of the town along Highway 191.
Morse said residents are ‘‘very concerned’’ about risks to health, groundwater and wildlife, listing potential impacts including overdraw of water, contamination, air pollution, odors, nuisance insects, heavier truck traffic and proximity to public buildings and residences. She noted McNeil Elementary School and the internationally recognized Whitewater Draw sandhill crane viewing area are near the proposed site.
Commissioners did not take action; Morse said the special-use application had not yet been submitted and urged the county to consider public-health and environmental impacts if a formal application is filed.
