Keizer parks staff outline summer projects: Big Toy repaint, splash pad opening, Phase 2 at community fields

Keizer Parks staff and board members reviewed a series of near-term capital and maintenance projects at the June 10 meeting, including work on the Keizer Rapids “Big Toy,” the city splash pad schedule, a playground replacement at Bob Newton Park and ongoing phased work at Keizer Community Fields.

Robert (parks staff) said volunteers and staff finished pressure-washing the Big Toy and crews plan to close the playground for painting and surface patching June 21–24 (dates subject to weather). “Step 1 of the repainting … looks amazing,” Robert said, and staff aim to minimize closure time while completing required curing for surface repairs.

The splash pad is scheduled to open this coming weekend and will operate through Labor Day on days forecasted above 75°F; planned hours are noon to 7 p.m. on days that meet the temperature threshold. Staff said the pad will run Wednesday through Sunday during the season.

Playground replacement at Bob Newton Park is planned to begin by the end of the month with an aggressive eight-week target for removal and replacement of the play structure. Robert told the board that a follow-up project next budget year will address the park’s sports court and parking/ADA access.

Phase 2 at the Kaiser Community Fields is underway and includes construction of concessions and restrooms, water and sewer connections, and front-entry hardscape. Robert said Phase 3 — paving the remainder of the parking lot and rebuilding an equipment shop — has no identified funding yet.

Board and staff also discussed donor plaques and bench standards after a public inquiry. Robert said the city now recommends a uniform powder-coated steel bench and matching plaque style for future donations; older wood benches and nonstandard plaques sometimes fade or deteriorate and have inconsistent records. Staff said they will repair or replace a vandalized plaque at a park entry and recommended creating an inventory of benches and plaques (photos and records) for future maintenance planning.

Other notes from staff: the public works fair will be June 18 at Keizer Rapids Park; staff expect playground surfacing patchwork to cure before reopening and urged residents to report irrigation or other maintenance issues directly to parks staff.

Why it matters: These maintenance and capital projects affect public access to high-use park amenities for Keizer residents through the summer and into next year; some projects require temporary closures.
